10/28/11

October is almost over!

It is hard to believe that October will soon be over and the snowflakes will start to fall soon! Please check the DSBN for weather advisories and bus cancellations.  Local radio stations (e.g. 105.7) will also inform the public of any school closures and/ or bus cancellations during the winter season.

The students have been working extremely hard on our Procedural writing unit and have created invitations, recipes, instructions, etc. throughout the month of October. The culmination of our unit will be on Monday, October 31, 2011 at our poetry cafe. We are very excited to see all of our parents, grandparents, and family members at our cafe on Monday. The event will commence after the parade. We have a number of poem presentations and literacy games planned for all to participate in.

Math: we are winding up our study of two digit numbers and adding/subtracting money. The test will be the first week of November. A review sheet will be sent home on Thursday, November 3rd. Please continue to play the different math games that have come home throughout our numeration unit. The next unit will be data management and graphing.

Science: This week will be the science test and year end projects for the grade three forces and movement unit and the simple machines for the grade two students. Review sheets were sent home the week of Oct. 24th to prepare for the test.

Social Studies: The grade three students will continue to focus on the Wendat , Anishinabe, and Early Settlers of Upper Canada in the late 1800's. The students will be going on a half day field trip and will role play an early settler child from the late 1800's. The grade two students are welcome to attend the trip or may choose to stay at school in another grade two class.
The grade two students will be focusing on completing a research project for a celebration of each child's choice. A special guest presentation for Divali and Eid is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31/11.

Arts: The students have recently completed some amazing masterpieces with a Picasso flare. We look forward to showcasing our work at the poetry cafe on Oct. 31st.
